Divergent by Veronica Roth

Beatrice Prior is in Abnegation, one of the five factions which were created by the city's founders to prevent another war. Abnegation, Beatrice's present faction values selflessness above all other things and repel vanity, because they're selfless they are in charge of the government. Erudite value knowledge, they create all the technology and medicine. Dauntless are their protectors, they show no fear of anything and are called crazy because they seem blind to danger. Candor value honesty, they tell even the harshest of truths leaving no hidden secrets. Amity are all about love, they're always happy and hugging one another, they take care of the crops and plant life. However there is also the faction-less, the ones that don't fit into any faction.

When a child reaches the age of sixteen they take an aptitude test which results in them finding out which faction is best for them and then at the "Choosing Ceremony" they decide if they stay in their original faction or move into another and leave behind their family forever because there is a saying "Faction Before Blood" which is taken very seriously. If the faction you choose believes you are not truly loyal then you will become faction-less.

When Beatrice goes for her test she is given an injection which opens up her mind to find out which faction she is best suited for. But her test does not go as it should. Her results are inconclusive meaning she is divergent. Divergents are feared greatly by the government because they cannot be placed in any faction meaning they cannot be controlled and so they are killed on sight. Beatrice is told she cannot tell anyone what she is and must trust in herself to know what faction she belongs to.

Beatrice tells no one of her results when she goes home and thinks on her decision. The next day her and her parents along with her brother Caleb walk to the Hub and take their seats. Beatrice is still unsure of her decision when it is her brother's turn to choose, of course she believes he will choose Abnegation as he was always brilliant at being selfless. She is shocked and hurt when her brother chooses Erudite which happens to be the enemy faction of Abnegation. It is Beatrice's choice next and she is almost absolutely certain of which faction she will choose, she cannot put her parents through the pain losing their only other child. But at the last moment she changes her mind and chooses Dauntless.

However that isn't were it ends. Each new members of every faction has to go through initiation to prove they actually belong in the faction they have chosen. If they fail their initiation then they become faction-less. Beatrice changes her name to Tris, a new name for a new life, she must leave her old life behind.

Tris along with other transfers has to go through many dangerous and painful tests to prove themselves worthy, there is no room for error. This is more difficult for Tris as she can't allow people to find out that she's Divergent. Whilst Tris is trying to survive she gets to know the mysterious "Four" and discovers a dangerous plot that involves Erudite.

Will Tris survive Dauntless and will she uncover what Erudite is planning?
